Mary Melvin, teacher education emerita, died March 18 at The Knolls in Oxford. She was 76 years old.
She spent her life teaching. Melvin began teaching at Miami in 1965 and retired as professor in 1994.
Melvin volunteered with the International Reading Foundation and the Open Society Foundation, which led her to also teach instructors in Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Melvin earned her bachelor’s degree at Miami, her master’s of arts at the University of Michigan and her doctorate at the University of Wisconsin.
She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sisters, Esther Melvin and Carolyn Koch, her brother George Melvin, two nephews, a great niece and a great nephew.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church or Oxford’s Habitat for Humanity.
