Capital punishment topic of Sherry Corbett Lecture Series

Robert Aponte will present "Hang'em High or Give Gun Control a Try: Which Really Reduces Murder?" at 4 p.m., Thursday, April 5, in 02 Upham Hall as part of Miami University's Sherry Corbett Memorial Lecture Series.

Aponte will discuss the flaws in using capital punishment as a deterrent and how the prevalence of firearms is a more preferred hypothesis. Aponte is an associate professor and chair of sociology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and received his doctorate from the University of Chicago.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

The Sherry Corbett Memorial Lecture Series, designed to celebrate the life and work of the sociology professor who was killed in 2002, is sponsored by the department of sociology and gerontology.
