Miami zoology students won four of the six awards presented at the Midwest Ecology and Evolution Conference held March 23-25 in Cincinnati.
Doctoral students Ann Showalter and Amber Rock won first and second runner up, respectively, for best talk; and undergraduate zoology majors Catherine Hoffman and Jessica St. Pierre won first place and first runner up, respectively, for the best poster award.
Showalter presented “Diet shifts and developmental requirements contribute to ontogenetic changes in fish stoichiometry"; and Rock presented “Interactive effects of light, nutrients, and predator identity on zooplankton communities." Both graduate students work with Maria Gonzalez, professor of zoology.
Hoffman, who conducts independent study research with Ann Rypstra, Distinguished Professor of Zoology, presented a poster on “Kinship and familiarity affects recognition and foraging in Pardosa milvina.” Hoffman was a Miami Hughes Intern in the Biological Sciences in summer 2011. St. Pierre, who conducts independent study research with Gonzalez, presented a poster on “Food chain efficiency and herbivore food quality: linking small-scale bioassays and large-scale mesocosm experiments."
