“We are exceptionally overjoyed to host Peter Sís,” said Brenda Dales, lecturer in teacher education. “His presence and words at Miami University will inspire and enliven passion for children's literature, and assist in invigorating international partnerships and understandings.” Sís, who was born in Brno, Czechoslovakia, started his career as a filmmaker. His award-winning film work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. His books have received numerous honors including illustration of a book that won the Newbery Medal, three Caldecott Honor Book awards, the Society of Illustrators Gold and Silver Medals, and he is a seven-time winner of The New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year. His many books include The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain, The Tree of Life, Tibet Through the Red Box, Starry Messenger: Galileo Galilei and, his first book for adults, The Conference of the Birds, based on a 12th-century Sufi poem. He was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2003. In awarding the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for illustration to Sís, the jury recognized “his extraordinary originality and deep creative power to relate highly complex stories that can be interpreted on many different levels.” During his visit at Miami, Sís will meet with Miami students and students from the Talawanda School District.
