Myaamiaki conference on Miami tribe research March 31: Celebrates 40-year relationship with Miami University

The 2012 Myaamiaki Conference, “Meeloniteeheelotaatiiyankwi: We Reflect: Miami University-Miami Nation 40 Years,” hosted at Miami Saturday, March 31, is the fifth biennial conference presenting research related to the Miami tribe. The conference is free and open to the public, but registration is required (go to www.myaamiaproject.org).

Presentations include the role of Myaamia in language reclamation; genetic relationships and preservation; computer science and language learning and a Miami tribal student panel, among others. Refer to the Myaamia Project website for a full schedule.

A concert by Joanne Shenandoah, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and Wolf Clan member of the Iroquois Confederacy, will be held at 8 p.m. March 31 in Leonard Theatre, Peabody Hall. Free tickets are available with Myaamiaki conference registration.

Celebrating anniversaries

This year’s conference also celebrates several milestones between the Miami tribe and Miami University:

• the 40th anniversary of the unique relationship between the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and Miami University which began with Chief Forest Olds' first visit to Miami University in 1972;

• the 20th anniversary of the enrollment of the first Miami tribal students at Miami University - there are now 38 tribal members who are graduates of Miami University; and

• the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Myaamia Project at Miami University which began as a tribal initiative to advance the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma's language and cultural revitalization efforts.
