University Senate action March 12

At the March 12, meeting of University Senate, Steven DeLue, chair, Executive Committee of University Senate, reported on the committee’s activities and on the February board of trustees' meeting.

Senate endorsed revisions to the Miami University Policy and Information Manual, Section 19.6.A, Policy on Use of Cellular Telephones and Photographic Imaging Devices Classroom/Exams; and discussed the Student Senate Bill, SR 011112, a bill supporting midterm grade reports for all students.

The March 19, Senate meeting is canceled. The next Senate meeting will be held at 3:15 p.m. Monday, March 26, 111 Harrison Hall.

SR 12-15
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate endorse the proposal to reform the Miami Plan. Proposal to Reform the Miami Plan

SR 12-16
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate adopt revisions to the Bylaws of University Senate, Section 6.C.10, University Multicultural Council, composition and function as set forth below: 6.C.10. COUNCIL ON DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION (CODI)
Advisory to the President and the Provost.
6.C.10.a. The Council on Diversity and Inclusion (CODI) shall be composed of:

One (1) faculty member who is a member of University Senate and shall serve as Senate Liaison.
Two (2) representatives from the College of Arts and Science.
One (1) representative from the Farmer School of Business.
One (1) representative from the School of Engineering and Applied Science.
One (1) representative from the School of Education, Health, and Society.
One (1) representative from the School of Fine Arts.
One (1) representative from the Division of Finance and Business Services.
Two (2) representatives from the Regional Campuses.
One (1) member of the Classified Professional Advisory Committee.
One (1) member of the Unclassified Professional Advisory Committee.
Two (2) at-large members.
Two (2) undergraduate students (at least one of whom is a member of the Diversity Affairs Council).
Two (2) graduate students (at least one of whom is a member of the Graduate Students of Color Association).
Five (5) administrative staff positions:
o The Associate Vice President for Institutional Diversity.
o The Director of Diversity Affairs, Student Affairs.
o The Assistant Vice President for Institutional Diversity will serve as Chair of the Council.
o The Director of the Center for American and World Cultures.
o The Director of the Women's Center.

The Executive Committee of University Senate, in consultation with the associate vice president for institutional diversity, shall nominate council members. These nominees shall be identified from a list of candidates composed of:

volunteers selected from the annual University Committee Volunteer List,
others recruited to achieve the balance necessary to meet the membership criteria,
individuals whose voice is necessary for the Council to effectively complete its primary functions.

Nominees must be able to serve at the regularly scheduled meeting time established for the Council on Diversity and Inclusion (CODI), and, for purposes of continuity and stability, be willing to serve for at least one three-year term (Section 6.A.1, Senate Committee Structure). Nominations shall normally be submitted for approval to University Senate no later than the last regularly scheduled Senate meeting in April proceeding the academic year in which the member will serve.

6.C.10.b. The functions of the Council on Diversity and Inclusion (CODI) are to advise the President and the Provost on matters of diversity; to engage in and facilitate long-range planning to: (1) build an intellectual community that recognizes that diverse experiences create a rich educational experience for all students, (2) foster an inclusive campus climate, and (3) foster the development of diversity-related competencies among faculty, staff, and students; to assess and identify trends, progress, and problems pertaining to campus diversity and climate; and to facilitate University-wide dialogue to promote understanding and constructive exchange of views on matters of diversity. The Council shall report regularly to University Senate.

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate adopt revisions to University Senate documents: Enabling Act of University Senate and Faculty Assembly, Bylaws of University Senate, Standing Rules of University Senate (references of the University Secretary and Office of the University Secretary). Twenty-five members of Faculty Assembly can challenge the resolutions by filing a petition with the Office of the University Secretary during the ten class days after publication in the e-Report.
