Faculty Assembly steering committee invites participation

02/21/2012

A Faculty Assembly steering committee has been created at Miami University to strengthen participation in shared governance and to encourage a healthy climate for discussion in matters of interest.

Members of Faculty Assembly may raise questions, discuss and offer comments on matters affecting the university and its environment. Faculty Assembly may also review and refer back actions of the University Senate and recommend matters to Senate for consideration. Section 2.5 of the Miami University Policy and Information Manual (MUPIM) defines Faculty Assembly in more detail (see attached PDf below).

The steering committee, empaneled last fall by Provost Bobby Gempesaw, with the support of President David Hodge and the Senate Executive Committee, has been charged with developing agenda items for meetings of Faculty Assembly, in consultation with the president and provost.

These are the first members of the committee:

  • Carl T. Dahlman (geography)
  • Timothy Vance Eaton (accountancy)
  • Raymond F. Gorman (provost’s office, ex officio)
  • Katherine E. Kickel (English, Hamilton)
  • Paul B. Larson (mathematics)
  • Bryan W. Marshall (political science)
  • M. Elise Radina (family studies and social work)
  • Amit Shukla (mechanical and manufacturing engineering), co-chair
  • Christopher G. Tanner (music), co-chair
  • Elias Tzoc (libraries)

Members of the committee were nominated by deans representing: the College of Arts and Science; the Farmer School of Business; the School of Education, Health and Society; the School of Engineering and Applied Science; the School of Fine Arts; the libraries; and the regional campuses. Each committee member will serve a term of two to three years. The provost and/or a designee serves as an ad hoc committee member. According to MUPIM 2.5, Faculty Assembly is chaired by the president.

The committee wishes to develop a transparent process for identifying agenda items that are of interest to members of Faculty Assembly. To that end, a Niihka site is in development that will serve as a medium for broadly soliciting, gathering and sharing information. In the meantime, faculty are encouraged to contact any steering committee member with thoughts, suggestions, comments or ideas as to how to improve participation in Faculty Assembly meetings, or regarding potential agenda items.
