Studio 88 presents "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf"

02/16/2012

"For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf" opens Feb. 22
The Miami University department of theatre presents "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf," by Ntozake Shange, at 8 p.m. Feb. 22-25 and at 2 p.m. Feb. 25-26 in Studio 88 Theatre, Center for Performing Arts. The production is directed by John Nyrere Frazier, master's student in theater.

Shange’s “choreopoem,” written in 1974, explores and celebrates the challenges of seven multi-cultural women. These women share their lives and personal experiences in their poems, personal/political narratives that introduce issues like abortion, domestic violence, love, loneliness, strength and rape. Each woman — who is known only by a color (Lady in Blue, Lady in Yellow etc.) — will perform her story separately, but together create a rich spectrum of human experience.

“For Colored Girls” won an Obie award and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play in 1977.

Frazier has worked professionally as an actor and dancer with Silver Sun Limited in Kingston, Rhode Island, as well as with a number of professional theatre companies in Chicago. He received an undergraduate degree from North Carolina Central University, and an MFA from Chicago College for the Performing Arts.
  • A pre-show panel discussion will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, with Denise Baszile, associate professor, educational leadership; Yu-Fang Cho, associate professor English and women’s, gender and sexuality studies; Cheryl L. Johnson, associate professor English; Lisa Weems, associate professor, educational leadership; and Nishani Frazier, assistant professor, history.

  • The director will present a post-show talk following the opening night performance Feb. 22;

  • A panel discussion with members of the cast will follow the Saturday matinee show, Feb. 25.

Tickets, $9 public, $8 seniors and $6 students/youth, are available at the Miami University box office. Call (513) 529-3200 or order online at www.tickets.muohio.edu.
