Recognizing that growing numbers of Ohioans are seeking information about long-term services and supports, Miami University's Scripps Gerontology Center has released its third edition of the Ohio Long-Term Services and Supports Factbook.
The book provides a basic introduction to long-term services and supports, which include any assistance given to people with limitations impacting their abilities to perform daily activities.
The book also provides an overview of Ohio’s long-term care services, the people served and the funding sources that support them. The newest edition includes enhancements and updates over previous editions, including:
- Expanded scope to include individuals of all ages with physical or cognitive limitations
- Updated statistics on long-term service use and expenditures
- New information on long-term service quality initiatives and innovations in long-term services
- Over 50 Internet resources for long-term services and supports
- Updated and expanded glossary
The book’s key facts include the following:
- In 2009, Ohio had approximately 970 nursing home facilities
- The typical nursing home in Ohio has 96 beds
- 36 percent of Ohio’s 2009 Medicaid budget was spent on long-term services and supports
- average cost for nursing home care in the state in 2009 was $5,300 per month
- In 2009, Ohio nursing homes had an occupancy rate of 86 percent
The Ohio Long-Term Services and Supports Factbook is authored by Jane Straker, senior research scholar at Scripps Gerontology Center; Robert Applebaum, director of the Ohio Long-Term Care Research Project; and gerontology doctoral candidate Denise Brothers. It also includes information regarding funding, cost, quality assurance and the future of long-term services. The complete book is available online.
