University Senate action Feb. 6

On Monday, Feb. 6, University Senate heard reports from: (1) Provost Bobby Gempesaw, executive vice president for Academic Affairs, and chair, University Senate; (2) Steven DeLue, chair, executive committee of University Senate; (3) Michael Kabbbaz, associate vice president for enrollment management, enrollment update; (4) Michael Curme, ad hoc digital evaluation committee, fall pilot of the "What Do You Think Platform"; and (5) David Prytherch, chair, sustainability committee.

Senate endorsed: (1) a proposal that Miami begin the process to revise the Miami Plan; (2) revisions to the name, composition, and function of the University Multicultural Council; and (3) revisions to University Senate documents.

With the approval of the January 23, 2012, Senate meeting, Senate endorsed Senate Resolution SR 12-13 and SR 12-14.

The next meeting of University Senate is scheduled to be held at 3:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, 111 Harrison Hall.

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate endorse proposed revisions to the combined bachelor’s and master’s degree program as amended and set forth below:

• Departments and programs that offer the master’s degree have the option of offering a combined bachelor’s and master’s program. Those that do shall submit a one-page program description for inclusion in the University Bulletin. Admission requirements beyond the minimum set by the Graduate School shall be included in the program description.
  
  
• Students can be admitted on a provisional basis to the combined program anytime during their academic career at Miami, from the time they are accepted for undergraduate admission. Upon earning a minimum of 64 hours and having a GPA of 3.25 or greater, students may apply to a combined program by completing the Graduate School application and submitting materials as required by the program to which they are applying. Standard application and admission procedures shall be used.
  
  
• Departments or programs with a combined degree may allow students to double-count up to 9 hours of graduate course work toward their undergraduate degree. With permission of the appropriate advisor(s) and dean(s) or their designee(s), these students may count the graduate courses toward their major, minor, electives, and university requirements.
  
  
• Students in a combined program will remain undergraduates until they apply for graduation or submit a request to the Graduate School to have their classification changed from undergraduate to graduate. Students must have completed a minimum of 128 hours to be classified as a graduate student. Students may receive their bachelor’s degree prior to completing their master’s degree. Upon receiving the bachelor’s degree, students will automatically be classified as graduate students.
  
  Note: Students receiving the bachelor’s degree prior to completing the master’s degree can count up to 9 hours of graduate course work toward their bachelor’s degree. Those hours can also count toward the completion of their master’s degree as indicated above.
  
  
• Both full- and part-time students may participate in the combined program at a department’s discretion. Regular time-limits for completing the master’s degree apply to students in a combined program.
