Lecture Series: Sanjay Gupta on "Medicine in Times of War and Disaster"

Sanjay Gupta, M.D., multiple Emmy Award-winning chief medical correspondent for CNN, will present "Medicine in Times of War and Disaster" at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, at Hall Auditorium. His talk is part of Miami University's 2011-2012 Lecture Series.

Gupta, a practicing neurosurgeon, reports on health and medical news for CNN’s “American Morning,” “Anderson Cooper 360” and CNN documentaries, and anchors the weekend medical affairs program, “Sanjay Gupta, M.D.”

Gupta reports on a range of medical and scientific topics and has reported on disasters worldwide. His award-winning reporting has included, among others, the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, for which he won two Emmys, and Hurricane Katrina, for which he won an Emmy for News and Documentary Outstanding Feature Story.

In 2003 he embedded with the U.S. Navy’s “Devil Docs” medical unit, reporting from Iraq and Kuwait. He provided live coverage of the first operation performed during the war and performed life-saving brain surgery himself five times in a desert operating room.

In addition to his work for CNN, Gupta is a member of the staff and faculty at the Emory University School of Medicine. He is associate chief of neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital and regularly performs surgery at Emory University and Grady hospitals.
Gupta is author of two best-selling books: Chasing Life (2007) and Cheating Death (2009).

In 2003 he was named a “pop culture icon” by USA TODAY; he also won the Humanitarian Award from the National Press Photographers Association that year. Among other awards, Gupta was honored in 2010 by John F. Kennedy University with its Laureate Award for leaders in health and wellness, and in 2011 Forbes magazine named him one of the “Ten Most Influential Celebrities.”

The lecture is free, but tickets are required due to limited seating. Free tickets will be available at the box office in Shriver Center beginning Wednesday, Jan. 25, for the Miami community and Friday, Jan. 27, for the general public.

The final speaker in the 2011-2012 series is Geoffrey Canada, “Improving the Lives of Children, One Poor Child at a Time,” Monday, Feb. 27.
