"A moment with ... Larry Fink"

01/12/2012

Larry Fink with Baby Burky
"A moment with ..." is a Q-and-A column featuring Miami employees.

Today, take "A moment with ... Larry Fink," assistant vice president for housing and auxiliary finance for housing, dining, recreation and business services. He is a Miami alumnus ('81, MBA '85), Miami Merger and an Oxford Township resident who owns what he likes to describe as "a mini-ranch."

Q: What is a day in HDRBS like?
A: Everyday brings new and exciting challenges. I am very fortunate to work with a team of talented and dedicated people who are committed to providing excellent service to the Miami community. It is rewarding to come to work knowing that HDRBS operations contribute to the success of our students.

Q: Miami had a lot of makeovers last summer, and with construction under way at the Armstrong Student Center and Maplestreet Station, what are you most excited about in the coming years?
A: It is indeed an exciting time to be on campus. We are in the beginning phase of our long range housing and dining master plan. Over the next 15 to 20 years, our residence halls will receive much needed renovations. The new dining facility, Maplestreet Station, is an exciting new project that will feature seven individual restaurants, all sharing one large kitchen and supported by the Demske Culinary Support Center. It will also have 90 residence hall beds on the second floor. Maplestreet Station will replace two older, less operationally efficient dining halls.

Q:How big is your farm?
A:I’d probably describe our property more as a mini- ranch, with just enough pasture for the animals.

Q: And, what kinds of animals do you have?
A: We (my wife and I) have three miniature donkeys- Hot Shot, Kokomo and Burky. We haven’t gotten into breeding. They are extraordinarily friendly and share a barn with our three horses. In addition to the three horses and three donkeys, we have three macaws, three dogs, three cats and two fish tanks. Yes, we love our animals!

Q: How did you get involved with donkeys?
A: I had a “weak moment” at the mule and donkey show at Hueston Woods in 2004. On an impulse, we bought our first donkey. We quickly decided he needed a companion, so we bought our second donkey about a week later. Just recently, our neighbor encouraged us to get a third donkey because he knew of one who needed a good home.

Q: Tell us your favorite Miami secret.
A: There are five Miami mergers in our family with a total of 11 Miami alumni. We just became proud grandparents for the first time about a week ago. Max Martin, Miami 2034!
