The suite of three exhibitions continues the study of women artists — introduced in Part I of the exhibition series last fall — and the contributions they have made in the fields of decorative arts, photography and textiles. “The Focal Point of Women” explores the contributions of women to the field of photography. The earliest documented photograph dates to 1826, yet women were not involved in photography until the last quarter of the 19th century. In the 1930s artists such as Dorothea Lange, Berenice Abbott, Imogen Cunningham and Lotte Jacobi, among others, became integral to the art form, using photography to tackle social, racial, political and gender issues. “Weaving Women into History” looks at the production of textiles, which as a sign of gender identification has changed over time. The survival of textile traditions is commonly viewed in indigenous cultures, where women continue to serve as the primary producers of garments, blankets, samplers, quilts and other fiber arts. “The Material Culture of Women” explores material culture such as pottery, furniture, silver, glass and toys, and the insights gained into issues of community, religion and gender roles. The museum is free and open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays. |
