Former economic adviser to Vladimir Putin to give Havighurst Lecture

Andrei Illarionov, who served as economic adviser from 2000 through 2005 to former Russian President Vladimir Putin, will present the annual Havighurst Lecture on "Putin's Russia and the Siloviki's Corporatist State" at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, in 111 Harrison Hall. His lecture is sponsored by Miami's Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies and is free and open to the public.

Illarionov is a senior fellow at the Cato Institute's Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity. While advising Putin, Illarionov also served as the president's personal representative (sherpa) in the G-8. He is one of Russia's most forceful and articulate advocates of an open society and democratic capitalism. In 1994 Illarionov founded the Institute of Economic Analysis and became its director. He has coauthored several economic programs for Russian governments and has written three books and more than 300 articles on Russian economic and social policies.

Illarionov’s lecture is held in conjunction with the Havighurst Symposium on “Putin’s Russia” Nov. 15-16. Panel discussions will be led by experts including Illarionov; Moscow Times correspondent and journalist Yulia Latynina, recipient of a Freedom Defenders Award from the U.S. Secretary of State; Carnegie Moscow Center Scholars Nikolay Petrov and Maria Lipman; and other scholars.
