John Altman, Miami '60: Celebration of the humanities

John Altman, Miami '60, entrepreneur and supporter of the humanities, will present "Revisiting the Humanities: Life Without a Business Degree" at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Miami University Art Museum. A reception will follow. Altman, the first director of Miami's Thomas C. Page Center for Entrepreneurship, was instrumental in establishing the Humanities Center at Miami.

Altman has been a highly successful entrepreneur for more than three decades. He owned, founded and/or was a partner in eight businesses, two of which were sold to multi-national companies, and served as senior manager of the multi-national corporations Rohm and Haas and ICI.

He has taught extensively at the university level, including Babson College and the University of California-Berkeley. At Miami, he was named the first Richard A. Forsythe Professor of Entrepreneurship, and received numerous teaching awards, including the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Associated Student Government in 1994.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Miami and a master’s degree from Fuller Theological Seminary.

Altman made possible the Altman Fellows program of the Humanities Center and other community-wide programs in the humanities.

His talk, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Humanities Center.
