Most of Miami University's more than 3,650 first-year students will arrive on campus Thursday, Aug. 18. Staff and student volunteers, in addition to Miami President David Hodge and Mrs. Valerie Hodge, will be on hand as usual to greet, direct, sign-in and carry boxes for students and families.
Among freshmen, 31 percent graduated in the top 10 percent of their classes, and 26 percent scored 29 or higher on the ACT. Forty-three percent are entering having earned college credit from AP, PSEOP or other programs.
“I am very pleased with the quality of the incoming class,” said Bobby Gempesaw, Miami’s provost. “Not only are we enrolling one of our larger freshman cohorts in years, this diverse class of high achievers comes from across the country and around the world.”
Fifty-two percent are female, and 61 percent are from Ohio. Out-of-state first-year students come from 39 states, and 181 international students, a record, come from 19 countries. Twelve percent are ethnically diverse, and 4.9 percent are from other countries. Nineteen percent are first-generation college students.
Among new finds on campus:
- All on-campus residence hall doors feature new “tap ‘n’ go” electronic locks that are opened via wireless signals from smart chips in students’ ID cards. This safety feature means when doors are closed, they’re locked, and the person with the ID card is the only person to open that designated door.
- Miami’s two oldest residence halls, Elliott and Stoddard, received the newest in HVAC over summer: geothermal heating and cooling, coming from 600-feet-deep wells. The halls, dating to 1829 and 1936 respectively, also received insulation, low-flow plumbing fixtures and other energy-efficient upgrades.
- 1,273 students and 139 faculty and staff are back from the 188 courses in which they participated in 45 countries this summer.
- 2011-2012 is the Year of the Arts at Miami. In addition to traditional performing and fine arts, a focus on the arts will infuse academics across campus.
Miami’s incoming class comes from a record application pool of 18,450 students.
