Miami will host its first Africana Film Festival, a four-day event including screenings of 17 films from 12 African countries and presentations by guest filmmakers, March 26-29.
African filmmakers, directors and international scholars will lead roundtables and discussions throughout the festival. "While the images of stereotypes, myths and depressed cultural experiences continue to be drawn out in the media and curricula, this festival will show films with positive messages and educational value," says festival convenor Babacar Camara (French and Italian, black world studies). "It will present images of Africa not usually available in the general media, created by Africans on issues pertaining to their societies."
Events will be held on Miami's Oxford, Middletown and Hamilton campuses. For a full schedule, go to the Oxford Events online calendar or download a program at casnov1.cas.muohio.edu/cawc/documents/ African%20Film%20Festival%202007%20program.pdf.
