Theatre production: "Art" opens Nov. 18

The Miami University department of theatre presents "Art" by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton and directed by Lewis Magruder, at 8 p.m. Nov. 18-20 and Dec. 2-4, and at 2 p.m. Dec. 5, in Gates-Abegglen Theatre.

“Art” premiered in Paris in 1995 and went on to win the Moliere Award for Best Author and a Tony Award for Best Play. It has been produced worldwide and translated and performed in over 30 languages.

The story concerns the cataclysmic effect on three friends when one of them purchases an expensive work of abstract art—a large painting consisting of white lines on a white canvas. As the three men engage in an ongoing debate over the value of the painting, emotions run high and the conflict escalates to the point of nearly destroying a long-standing friendship.
