McGuffey, Phillips Hall rededication open to all

03/19/2007

Miami University's School of Education and Allied Professions will celebrate the rededication of Phillips and McGuffey halls Saturday, April 21. Both buildings have undergone multimillion-dollar renovations.

"We promise there won't be any blue books, but the event will feature lectures by top professors and open houses at both Phillips and McGuffey halls," said Carine Feyten, dean of the school.

"Anyone with an interest in either building is cordially invited to attend all or part of the festivities."

The event will feature:
• Open houses and tours 8:30-11:30 a.m. at Phillips and McGuffey.
• Classes without quizzes 9:30-11:20 a.m. on such topics as family poverty, Title IX and preparing educators for accountability.
• The rededication of McGuffey Hall at 11:30 a.m. at 322 McGuffey.
• An informal lunch at noon, at $10 per person in the Phillips commons area.
• The rededication of Phillips Hall at the commons at 1 p.m.

McGuffey Hall, named to honor William Holmes McGuffey, father of the McGuffey Readers, was built in three stages from 1910-24 to house the expanding number of students in one of Ohio's first teacher education schools. The McGuffey Lab School, which enrolled about 400 students a year and served as training ground for about 100 student teachers a year, eventually occupied the entire south wing of McGuffey. A three-year, $14.5 million renovation was completed in fall 2006.

Phillips Hall, built in 1962, was named in honor of Margaret E. Phillips, chair of the department of physical education for women between 1921 and 1961. It is one of the few buildings on campus named for a woman. The building underwent extensive renovations totaling approximately $4.5 million that were completed in 2002.

Phillips now houses classrooms and labs for physical education, health and sport studies students.

Complete information, including how to register online and how to submit online memories, is available at www.muohio.edu/eap/rededication.

Brochures with a mail-in form are available by calling 529-6317. Deadline to register for the luncheon is April 17.
