Johnson, Shaffer named CAS Distinguished Educators

Katie Johnson, associate professor of English and the Western program, and Marguerite (Peggy) Shaffer, associate professor of American studies and history and director of the American studies program, have been named College of Arts and Science Distinguished Educators for 2010. Each will receive a $2,000 professional expense account and present a lecture during the academic year.

Johnson, also an affiliate of the film studies program, specializes in theater, film and gender studies. She is author of Sisters in Sin: The Image of the Prostitute on the New York Stage. She is currently working on Sex for Sale: American Brothel Plays, 1909-1926, a critical anthology of unpublished early twentieth-century American plays about prostitution. She is also working on a book project called Razing the Great White Way: Toward a New Genealogy of Broadway’s Golden Era. Johnson has twice been nominated for the Associated Student Government Outstanding Professor award.

Shaffer specializes in U.S. cultural history with an emphasis on conceptions of nature and the construction of public culture. Her current research focuses on the expressions and activities of popular environmentalism. She is the author of See America First: Tourism and National Identity, 1880-1940 and the editor of Public Culture: Diversity, Democracy and Community in the United States. She was a Harry T. Wilks Fellow in 2007-2008 and last year taught at Miami’s Luxembourg campus.
