Five Miami University faculty members received Shoupp Awards for 2010-2011. The program, sponsored by the office for the advancement of research and scholarship, supports proposals for projects in research areas that are tied to the Ohio Third Frontier initiative.
Recipients are:
- Neil Danielson, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, $4,500 for “A Universal Solid Phase Extraction Stationary Phase;”
- Khalid Eid, assistant professor of physics, $5,000 for “Eliminating Water Droplets on Metal Plates by Fabricating Hydrophilic/Super-Hydrophobic Microchannels on the Surface;”
- Benjamin Gung, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, $5,000 for “Study of Gold-Catalyzed {4+3} Cycloaddition Reactions, Development of Enantioselective Au(l)-Catalyzed Reactions;” and
- Donna Scarborough, assistant professor of speech pathology and audiology, and Michael Bailey-Van Kuren, associate professor of mechanical and manufacturing engineering, $5,000 for “Altering the Gag Reflex via a Novel Glove Device.”
The Shoupp program phase I awards, up to $5,000, support initiation of collaborative research projects with business and industry. Phase II awards, between $10,000 and $20,000, require a contribution from business or industry matching or exceeding Miami’s contribution.
The awards are named in honor of the late William E. Shoupp, a charter member and chair of the Miami University Research Advisory Council.
