Microbiology students receive department honors

Miami University’s department of microbiology presented awards and scholarships to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students.
The Miami University department of microbiology presented awards and scholarships to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students Wednesday, April 14, during the Orton K. Stark Lecture given by Paul W. Doetsch, Distinguished Chair in Cancer Research at the Emory University School of Medicine.

The Orton K. Stark (OKS) senior award, named for the founding chair of the microbiology department, went to Andrew Allbee. The outstanding first-year, sophomore and junior OKS awards were received by Xingfu Mao, Marcus Toral and Michael Bucci, respectively.

The OKS graduate award was received by William Penwell, who is studying in the laboratory of Luis Actis, chair and professor of microbiology.

Dr. and Mrs. J.K. Bhattacharjee awards were presented to Jason Chakroff, Nikita Wagle, Ian Mikolaj, Ashley Holly, Audrey Lloyd, Samuel Murakami, Sankalp Malhotra, Thomas Park, Kelly Webb and Bucci.

The Susan W. Rockwood award was presented to graduate student Dominika Jurkovic, who is studying in the laboratory of Mitchell Balish, assistant professor of microbiology.

The Oren E. Taft scholarship was presented to Charles Warden. Mark Noviski and Jennifer Yonkof received the Lawrence Day awards.
