Miami Libraries to reduce hours, eliminate some services

04/09/2010

Miami University Libraries announce reduction in hours and some elimination of services beginning in fall 2010.

In order to effectively support core library services for Miami’s students, faculty and staff, the libraries will eliminate redundant services. Electronic reserves will be discontinued at the end of summer 2010. Heavy use of the Blackboard course management system to deliver course content has eroded E-reserves usage over the years and created confusion for many students who aren’t sure where to find course readings. To facilitate this transition, the libraries will offer training for faculty, TA’s and department administrative assistants in digitizing readings to be placed on Blackboard. Each faculty member who currently has electronic readings on e-reserve will be given access to the readings files.

IT Services offers Blackboard support for faculty. The libraries will continue to maintain non-electronic formats of reserve material in all libraries.

The libraries will also cease to offer poster printing at the end of summer 2010. The cost for equipment, supplies and staff time are excessive. IT services’ print center will continue to offer poster printing for Miami’s students, faculty and staff.

Beginning this fall semester, weekend hours will be reduced in King Library on Friday and Saturday nights. King Library will close at 10 p.m. on Fridays, be open 9 a.m. - 10 p.m. Saturdays, and open at 11 a.m. on Sundays. King Library will be open 24 hours from Sunday morning until Friday night. All other libraries will be open the same hours as this academic year.
