In memoriam: Thomas A. Idinopulos

03/09/2010

Thomas A. Idinopulos, 74, professor emeritus of comparative religion, died March 7 at his home in Cincinnati. Idinopulos taught at Miami University from 1966 until his retirement in 2008.

Idinopulos is the author of more than 160 publications including more than 100 articles and book chapters on religion, politics and literature in journals including Encounter, Journal of Religion, Middle East Review and Israeli Bulletin of Religious Affairs. In 2008, he and Charles Watson, professor of management at Miami, co-authored the book, Are You Your Own Worst Enemy? 9 Inner Strengths You Need to Break Self-Defeating Tendencies at Work.

"Tom and I met in the '70s in what was then known as the faculty lounge," said Watson explaining how the two began work on the book. "Members of the faculty would gather for coffee around 9:15 every morning and enjoy lively conversations. Tom liked to engage the b-school faculty - particularly those who taught economics - in mind-bending conversations."

Idinopulos also is author of the books Jerusalem Blessed, Jerusalem Cursed: Jews, Christians, Muslims in the Holy City from David's Time to Our Own, The Erosion of Faith: An Inquiry into the Origins of the Contemporary Crisis in Religious Thought and Land Weathered by Miracles: Historic Palestine from Bonaparte and Muhammad Ali to Ben-Gurion and The Mufti.

He is survived by his wife, Lea; children, David (Tracy) and Michael (Kathrina); grandchildren Demitri, Nichols, Gabriella, Zachary, Cecilia and Benjamin; sister, Maria Koutures.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 13, at the Mount Auburn Presbyterian Church, 103 William Howard Taft Road, Cincinnati. Remembrances may be made to Reed College, office of college relations, 3203 SE Woodstock Blvd., Portland, Or. 97202-8199.
