Miami community invited to view new mobile health unit

02/02/2010

Students, faculty and staff at Miami University have a chance to get the first look at a new 38-foot mobile health unit, a national demonstration project that could be the blueprint for health promotion at colleges across the country. The unit is available to tour from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, in Millett Hall’s west side parking lot.

The Miami Mobile Health Initiative will be available to students every weekend starting Feb. 24 to educate them on such health issues as smoking, diabetes, stress, sexuality, alcohol and other drugs, and additional health issues.

The unit will be parked in the Uptown neighborhood Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to midnight and select days on campus during the semester.

It will be staffed by peer health educators – four will be on the unit each night – who will distribute information and answer questions. All 16 of the peer educators – eight men and eight women – have peer health educator certification training through the BACCHUS Network, the American Lung Association, the Ohio Department of Health, and have completed a capstone class at Miami in health and wellness.

This student-run, student-focused project is designed to help college students be more aware of their own health, and health issues in general. Many displays in the unit will be interactive, allowing students to have a hands-on educational experience.

Miami received a $300,000 Ford Foundation grant to plan and implement the Miami Mobile Health Initiative, which also was made possible through a partnership with Armor Mobile Systems, a company that engineers, designs and builds mobile medical vehicles at its Mason facility.
