Physics Bicentennial celebration: Arfken lecture Nov. 5

10/30/2009

The Miami University department of physics will celebrate Miami's Bicentennial with an open house 5-7:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, in Culler Hall. The Arfken Physics Scholar-in-Residence Lecture will follow at 7:30 p.m. in 46 Culler Hall. Julio Gea-Banacloche, professor of physics at the University of Arkansas, will present "Fate and the Physicists."

Gea-Banacloche’s talk will explain the current understanding of what may be called the “creative freedom” of the physical world, and review some of the history of the question “is the future predetermined?” He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and an associate editor of Physics Review A. His research includes theoretical work in laser physics, quantum optics and quantum information.

The physics open house Bicentennial celebration will feature tours of research laboratories, a display of old-time lab instruments and a video of the department's history.
