Miamians recognized as advocates for women

Individuals received Women’s Leadership and Male Ally Awards honoring their efforts as advocates for women, champions of equality and models of leadership during the Women’s Leadership Symposium and Celebration hosted Oct. 23 by Miami University’s women’s center.

Women’s Leadership Awards recipients for 2009:

  • Jenise Bauman, doctoral candidate in botany
  • Carol Bowles, program associate in the office of community engagement
  • Jennifer Brunner, 1978 alumna, secretary of state, Ohio
  • Brittany Martin, senior psychology major
  • Lana Kay Rosenberg, associate professor of kinesiology and health
  • Sara Skolnick, nurse practitioner in Student Health Service

Alumnus Alen Amini (2009) was recognized with the 2009 Male Ally Award. Alysia Fischer, visiting assistant professor of the Center for American and World Cultures, received the 2009 Kathy McMahon Klosterman Award.

Other award nominees included: Lisa Barhorst, 1988 alumna; Matt Boaz, director of the office of equity and equal opportunity; Stacey Browning, 1990 alumna; John Detherage, Oxford fire chief; Michael Eblin, senior interdisciplinary studies major; Elyse Gambardella, graduate residence director in the office of residence life; Carrie Gellenbeck, junior supply chain and operations management major; Aimee Maple, senior English literature and women’s studies major; Tierionna Morris, senior integrated English language arts education major; Atiyaa Reed, senior chemical engineering major; Elise Radina, associate professor of family studies and social work; Ron Scott, associate professor of communication and interim associate vice president for institutional diversity; John Ward, assistant director of clinical and men’s services in student counseling service; Monica Ways, director of the office of community engagement and service; and Clara Wilson, sophomore zoology major.

Co-sponsors of the event were Diversity Initiatives Fund, Etheridge Center for Reflective Leadership, Panhellenic Association and Miami University Special Events Fund.
