LegacyFest "I'm with the Band" discount ticket deal extended

10/22/2009

Benny Golson to perform at LegacyFest, Oct. 23.
Friday's (Oct. 23) spectacular showcase of 900 performers may well be the largest ensemble ever assembled in Oxford: all 4 Miami choirs, wind ensemble, jazz band, marching band plus Talawanda’s marching band and choir adds up to a big Bicentennial Birthday Bash with jazz legend Benny Golson.

The Performing Arts Series invites the Miami community to just say, “I’m with the Band” and save $5 on each adult tickets, $4 on each senior citizen ticket and $3 on each student ticket through 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at the Shriver Center Box Office, 529-3200.

Miami sophomore and Glee Clubber Corbin Mathias produced this trailer to promote the event:

The concert includes parts of Carmina Burana and parts of the Rutter Gloria, and a performance by jazz legend Benny Golson (composer of jazz standards like “Killer Joe” and Whisper Not”). Several world premieres will be on the program, including “The Trees of Miamia” written by James Lentini, dean of the School of Fine Arts. The piece , takes its text from poet Percy MacKaye, who was an internationally recognized figure in literature in the early 1900's, and who was a "poet in residence" Miami University's campus from 1920-24. While at Miami, MacKaye wrote a poem called The Trees of Miami, which first appeared in The Miami University Bulletin in 1923. A portion of the poem appears on a plaque in Upham Hall.

Other specially written pieces by Miami composers, including Jim Sheppard, David Shaffer, and recent graduate Andrew Goldie, will also be performed.
