Kitchen burners at Shriver Center will be turned up at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, as students team up to compete in this year's RedHawk Chef, part of Miami University's Bicentennial homecoming celebration. This annual event sponsored by the Shriver Center program board turns students into chefs as they stir, whip and bake their way to the coveted top cooking title.
Fashioned after the popular television show, “Iron chef,” RedHawk Chef includes six teams of students representing various campus organizations. They are given a list of ingredients to plan their menus in advance; however, they are not told about one secret ingredient until the night of the event. They must use the secret ingredient in two of three dishes they create. Students have one hour to cook all dishes.
Marijo Nootz, senior director of Shriver Center, says this is a “fun, fast-paced evening. Staff members of housing, dining and guest services also get involved serving as judges, consultants, and house chefs who make sure the teams have what they need and follow food prep protocol.”
New this year will be a cookie-decorating contest for members of the audience.
In November of 2008, RedHawk Chef was recognized by the Mid America regional conference of the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA). The program board received outstanding original program and outstanding multicultural program awards for the 3rd annual RedHawk Chef competition.
