Smith receives distinguished service award

Robert Smith, Miami University professor in the mathematics department and director of the Junior Scholars program has received the C.C. MacDuffee Award for Distinguished Service.

The award was granted to Smith in August at the annual Mathematical Association of America’s MathFest, in Portland, Ore. David Sutherland, president of Pi Mu Epsilon, a national mathematics honor society, presented Smith with the honor.

Smith, has served as the Pi Mu Epsilon chapter adviser at Miami since 1989, and was also the president of the organization from 2002 to 2005.

“What really stands out about Robert is his seemingly unlimited energy, enthusiasm and organizational skills,” said David Sutherland, current president of Pi Mu Epsilon.

The C.C. MacDuffee Award recognizes those who have notably contributed to the society and its student members. The award was created in 1966 to honor the profound commitment and service that MacDuffee offered to society.

Founded in 1914 at Syracuse University, Pi Mu Epsilon was developed to promote mathematics and to acknowledge those students who are engaged in understanding mathematics. Currently, there are over 300 chapters at various colleges and universities throughout the nation.
