Zoology graduate students win international awards

Benjamin Philip, a Miami University doctoral student in zoology, and Yuta Kawarasaki, a master's student in zoology, received top awards at the International Symposium of Environmental Physiology of Ectotherms and Plants (ISEPEP) held in Tsukuba, Japan, in August.

Philip won the award for best oral presentation by a student for his paper “The Role of Aquaporins in Promoting Freeze Tolerance in Insects.”

Kawarasaki won the award for best poster presentation by a student for “Rapid Cold-Hardening Protects Against Cold-Induced Apoptosis.”

Philip and Kawarasaki both conduct research in cryobiology with adviser Rick Lee, Distinguished Professor of zoology.
