The Miami University Libraries Diversity Cluster presents the Cultural Biography Film Series and Workshop. The free series contains three films shown from noon to 2 p.m. in Room 320 King Library on selected Thursdays through fall semester. The first film, "Clown," runs Thursday, Sept. 10 and again Sept. 17.
The Cultural Biography Film Series and Workshop provides students, faculty, and staff with opportunities to recognize and appreciate the similarities and differences among different cultures, as well as the ability to obtain a better understanding of cultural differences and their impact on one’s experiences and opportunities.
“Clown” examines the lives of three “Clown-Americans” and their families as they encounter observations about life on the other side of stereotypes. Through the combination of drama and comedy, “Clown” considers and removes the terrible realities of bias and racism in America.
The second film, “The Way Home,” will be presented Sept. 24. “The Way Home” documents 64 women of various cultures such as, Indigenous, African-American, Arab, Asian, European-American, Jewish, Latina and Multiracial. These women come together and share their experience of racism in America over the course of eight months.
The third film will be shown Oct. 8. “White Mirrors of Privilege” includes the personal stories of white activists and their continuous drive of transformation. Participants also will have the opportunity to discuss their experience with being unconscious about their sense of white supremacy.
In addition to the movies, a workshop will be held Oct. 22 to help Miami University students, faculty, and staff learn how to podcast and or vodcast their cultural biographies on the Internet.
