Graduate student receives marine policy fellowship worth $46,000

09/09/2009

Carl Nim, a Miami University graduate student in the Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES), received the National Sea Grant College Program Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

He is one of 50 students nationwide awarded with the grant, which matches highly qualified graduate students with “hosts” in the legislative and executive branches of government located in the Washington, D.C., area, for a one year paid fellowship worth $46,000.

The Sea Grant Marine Policy Fellowship was established in 1979 to provide a unique educational experience to students who have an interest in ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources and in the national policy decisions affecting those resources.

Nim, who received a master’s in geography from Miami in 2006, conducts research on land use and environment perception following a shift from dive-based to cruise-based tourism on the island of Cozumel, Mexico. He also studies the potential effects of diver activity on coral reef integrity near the island of Curacao. Locally, he works with the IES public service project’s Butler County Stream Team, monitoring storm water outfalls to Butler County streams.
