Hey to be interim dean of Miami Middletown

07/14/2009

Jeanne Hey
Jeanne Hey, professor of political science and director of international studies at Miami University, has agreed to become interim dean of Miami University Middletown for 2009-10, effective August 10.

Kelly Cowan, who has served Miami Middletown as interim dean and dean since 2005, announced her resignation from that post May 27. A national search for a successor to Cowan will continue this fall. Cowan, a microbiologist, will begin serving a one-year appointment as a special community liaison August 10 to continue the campus' ties to the community until a new permanent dean is appointed.

Hey has taught at Miami since 1992. She has served on many university committees and taskforces, including the Taskforce on International Education and Study Abroad, the University Senate, the Committee to Evaluate Administrators, and the Liberal Education Special Committee on International Curriculum. In 2008-09, Hey chaired the University Fiscal Priorities and Budget Committee. As chair, she organized a special session of University Senate around the budget challenges and worked closely with senior administrators throughout the year.

"I am extremely grateful to Professor Hey for taking on this important assignment," said Jeffrey Herbst, provost.

Hey's research interests include foreign policy behavior of less developed and small states, especially in Latin America. In 1992-93, Hey was a Pew Faculty Fellow in International Studies at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. She has completed numerous teaching and research appointments in international settings, including in Edinburgh, Scotland (2007), Miami University's Dolibois European Center in Differdange, Luxembourg (1998-2000), the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) in Quito, Ecuador (1991, 1994) and at the Centre Universitaire de Luxembourg in Luxembourg City (2000).
