Miami's dial-up Internet service to end July 1

06/25/2009

As announced earlier this spring, Miami will terminate the dial-up Internet service effective July 1, 2009. Very low usage, availability of low-cost and free alternatives, and university budget constraints have driven this decision.

Those who have been using the dial-up service will need to find another provider. Commercial dial-up services are available for as little as $10 a month, with some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) offering zero cost for a very small number of connection hours.

High-speed Internet services (cable and DSL) are available to many households. Current users of the dial-in service may wish to review availability, costs and advantages of moving to that option.

When it was introduced, dial-up Internet service was one of the key IT services that universities offered to students, faculty and staff. This free service encouraged growing technology usage from home and met the existing commercial offerings of the times. Today, high-speed access is the norm and dial-in is too slow for many uses of the Internet.
