06/18/2009

Five Miami University students have received the national Gilman Scholarship to be used toward their expenses while studying abroad.

The Gilman Scholarship Program is designed to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad as well as the kinds of countries and regions they visit. It is meant for students who have traditionally been underrepresented in study abroad education. The Gilman Scholarship Program received a total of 1,927 applications for a total of 850 possible awards.

The recipients below also receive the Pell Grant, a requirement for being eligible for the Gilman Scholarship.

Anthony Alessi, a junior Chemical Engineering major from Findlay, has been awarded $8,000 to study in Egypt. Tiffanie Clark, a junior Spanish major and Latin American studies minor from Columbus, has been awarded $4,000 to study in Mexico. Maxwell Forstag, a senior international studies major and Spanish minor from Chagrin Falls, has been awarded $5,000 to study in Ghana. Jessica Gephart, a junior zoology and environmental science major and mathematics minor from Findlay, has been awarded $3,500 to study in Ghana. Casey Shiray, a senior East Asian languages and culture major and interactive media studies minor from Loveland, has been awarded $5,000 to study in Japan.

Shiray also received an additional $2,500 scholarship from the Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project (ATJ). The ATJ scholarship, funded by private foundations and major U.S. corporations, awards 100 scholarships a year to assist students with traveling and living expenses while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an entire academic year.
