The GREEN (Growing Environmental Education Now) Teachers Institute (GTI) at Miami University is preparing for its popular summer workshops that help local teachers increase their natural and environmental science knowledge and employ hands-on and inquiry-based teaching methods in their classrooms.
While this summer’s workshops already are full, waitlists are available. One of the GTI’s most popular offerings, Museum Resources for Teachers, uses the Hefner Zoology Museum’s galleries, exhibits and collections to help teachers develop the knowledge and skills needed to teach basic biological, ecological and environmental concepts.
During the June 15-26 workshop at Miami, participants will develop environmental activities for the classroom and non-formal settings. The Institute for Museum and Library Services and Duke Energy are sponsoring the workshop.
The InteGreat Science workshops (June 22-26 at Nagel Middle School in Cincinnati and August 3-7 on Miami’s Oxford campus) allow K-8 teachers to participate in multiple science units and design original science units using current technologies, including projection systems, presentation media, word processing, digital photography, hyperlinks and wikis (community Web sites to share educational ideas). The Ohio Environmental Education Fund is sponsoring the workshop.
“A People and Their Homeland: The Miami Tribe (Myaamia)” is a two-week workshop July 6-17 for pre-K-12 teachers. Focused on the cultural and natural history of the Myaamia, the workshop illustrates the interdisciplinary nature of environmental education. Topics include the Myaamia worldview and language; traditional foods and customs; tribal concepts of nature, time and history; the biology of culturally significant ecosystems, plants and animals; and the future of the Myaamia as a living people. The Ohio Humanities Council and the Bever Family Foundation are sponsors.
Teachers attending the GTI workshops earn graduate credit and receive resources for use in their classrooms and extensive follow-up throughout the academic year. The GTI and the Hefner Zoology Museum are the core components of Miami’s Center for Environmental Education and Natural History.
