Miami University senior Joseph Harrison King of Nicholasville, Ky., placed third in the tenth annual American Council of Teachers of Russian National Post-Secondary Russian Essay Contest.
King received his third place honor in the Non-Heritage Learners, Level 3 Division for his essay. King, who is an international studies major specializing in Russian, East Europe and Eurasian studies, was in his third year of studying the Russian language at the time of the contest.
Participants in his division were asked to write spontaneous essays, in Russian, in one hour, on their favorite place: fiction or non-fiction. King wrote about his trip to Tallinn, Estonia, last summer.
More than 1000 essays were entered overall in this year’s contest with all essays reviewed by three judges from Russia.
