Miami professor receives educator award

Judith de Luce, professor and chair in the department of classics at Miami University, received the Outstanding Educator Award from her alma mater Colby College.

First presented in 1988, this award is presented to an alumnus/a who has demonstrated exceptional distinction in the classroom. De Luce received a bachelor’s of arts degree from Colby College in 1968, majoring in Latin.

She earned her master’s in Latin (1971) and her doctorate (1974) in the classics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She joined Miami in 1974 as assistant professor and was appointed professor in 1991. She has edited numerous books and written many articles. Her research interests include aging in the ancient world; Latin Literature of the Late Republic and early Empire (Cicero, Ovid); women’s studies; animal behavior; ancient law; race and ethnicity; dramatic literature in performance; and technology in the classroom.

The outstanding teacher or professor awarded has shown those qualities that most encourage students to learn and that inspire them to continue learning. The award, which includes a plaque and an armchair, is presented at the recipient’s workplace during National Education Week in the fall.
