|
Morton’s research encompasses both real world applications and fundamental research in advanced GPS receiver design, remote sensing and studies of the Earth’s upper atmosphere, and signal processing and sensor integrations for navigation applications. Her research in advanced GPS receiver design aims to improve current technology to achieve higher accuracy in position solutions under stringent conditions such as operating indoors, on fast moving platforms, or in environments where there are electromagnetic interferences. She has actively engaged Miami undergraduate and graduate students innovative navigation sensor integration and signal processing projects. Projects include the GPS-aided autonomous lawn mower; an integrated position, velocity, posture, and physiological monitoring system for equestrian sports; and a real-time Miami Metro Bus tracking and schedule prediction system. Morton is a founder of and Miami’s representative to the Consortium of Ohio Universities on Navigation and Timekeeping (COUNT), which includes experts from Miami, Ohio and Ohio State universities and the Air Force Institute of Technology. She joined the Miami faculty in 2000 and played a critical role in developing the new electrical and computer engineering curricula. She has been the principal investigator or co-investigator for $2.3 million of externally funded projects, and has established research and educational collaborations with government research laboratories and leading domestic and international institutions. Morton is associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Aerospace & Electronics and is a member of the editorial board for GPS Solutions; she has served as chair of the Institute of Navigation (ION), Dayton section; and currently serves as ION’s outreach committee chair and chair of the membership and awards committee for Chinese Professionals in GPS (CPGPS). Recently she was part of a group of worldwide global navigation satellite system experts invited to present at the Workshop on Satellite Navigation Science and Technology for Africa held at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy. Sigma Xi is an international scientific and research honor society supporting original work in science and technology. |
