Shengqian Ma wins international prize for young chemists

04/14/2009

Shengqian Ma
Shengqian Ma, who received a doctorate in inorganic chemistry from Miami University in 2008, is one of five winners of the 2009 International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Prize for Young Chemists. The international competition recognized Ma’s doctoral thesis work on “Gas Adsorption Applications of Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks.”

Porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a relatively new class of materials, “will continue to attract interest and inquiry by both academia and industry,” explains Ma. “They exhibit considerable potential for the adsorptive storage of both hydrogen and methane in energy applications, as well as, gas separation and purification in industrial applications.”

For a summary of his research, go to http://iupac.org/news/prize/2009/Ma.pdf.

As part of the prize, Ma will receive $1,000 and an expense-paid trip to the IUPAC Congress in Glasgow, Scotland, in August.

His doctoral adviser was Hong-Cai Zhou, Miami associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry (now professor of chemistry at Texas A&M University). Ma is currently a Director’s Dissertation Fellow at the Argonne National Laboratory, http://www.anl.gov/Media_Center/News/2009/news090223.html.
