Miami students take awards at singing competition

Miami vocal students participated in a regional competition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition.
Ten Miami University students took awards at the Buckeye Chapter, National Association of Teachers of Singing Voice Competition held at Cedarville College April 3-4. Students of associate professor Mari Opatz-Muni, assistant professor Ben Smolder and lecturer Alison Acord were accompanied by pianists Smolder and Christina Haan at the competition.

Eighteen Miami singers participated, part of 200 students representing more than 25 universities and colleges including the Cleveland Institute of Music, Ohio State, Ohio University, Baldwin Wallace, Bowling Green and Kent State.

Opatz-Muni said, “It is clear from comments by our colleagues from other schools, as well as other students participating that our success at this competition is becoming well known. No school had a larger percentage of winners than Miami.”

Winners and categories included:

First place: Megan McGill, a freshman from West Chester; Emily Moses, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo.; Antonia Tamer, a junior from Cincinnati; and Phillip Jennings, a junior from Lexington.

Second place: Wyko ter Haar, a sophomore Dayton; Kevin Brown, a junior from Cincinnati; Roy Eikleberry, a senior from St. Clairsville; and Mark Rysdon, a graduate student from Oxford.

Third place: Mark Aiken, a sophomore from Cincinnati.

Fourth place/honorable mention: Lori Pacholka, a senior from Xenia.

Other Miami participants were: Lara Wolford, Mary Therese Bridge, Alyson Rothenbusch, Jade Victoria, Ashley Hall, Taylor Luby, Lohol Gonzales and Brian McQueen.
