Miami's dial-up Internet service to retire July 1

04/14/2009

When it was introduced, dial-up Internet service was one of the significant IT services that universities offered to students, faculty and staff. This free service encouraged growing technology usage from home and met the existing commercial offerings of the times.

Today, high-speed access is the norm and dial-up is too slow for many uses of the Internet.

Miami reduced the dial-up modem service last year, and will terminate the service effective July 1, 2009. Very low usage, availability of low-cost and free alternatives, and university budget constraints have driven this decision.

Those who have been using the dial-up service will need to find another provider.
