Recyclemania 2007: national collegiate
recycling contest has grown from 2 to 200

Now in its seventh year, RecyleMania has grown from two to 200 universities competing to see which school can recycle the most.

Miami, which came in third of 87 schools last year, and first of 48 and of 17 schools in 2005 and 2004, respectively, has participated every year. Miami's program annually diverts 50 percent of its waste stream, saving disposal fees and landfill space.

The goal of the 10-week competition is to increase awareness of campus recycling. At Miami, RecyleMania results each year have reflected an increase in pounds recycled per on-campus student (see chart), demonstrating its success.

The 2007 contest began Jan. 29 along with a residence hall competition. The contest ends April 7 and results will be available April 14.

RecycleMania is organized and operated by university recycling coordinators; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's WasteWise office handles the logistics of the national contest. Sponsors include the National Recycling Coalition, the College and University Recycling Council and the National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Program.

According to the U.S. EPA, participating RecycleMania schools last year recycled more than 18.6 million pounds of material during the contest.
