Thierry Leterre, new dean for MUDEC

Thierry Leterre, professor of political science and a former vice-dean at the University of Versailles will become the next dean of the Miami University Dolibois European Center (MUDEC) in Luxembourg, beginning in August. He will also be appointed as professor of political science.

At the University of Versailles Leterre has held positions as vice-dean of the faculty of law and political science and as vice-president in charge of international relations. He also created and managed the master’s track in political philosophy at Sciences Po in Paris.

His knowledge of American higher education comes in part from having served the last six summers in the French language program at Middlebury College, most recently as that program’s associate director, and at Georgetown University’s BMW European Center as the current visiting French Fulbright-Schumer scholar. Previously, he served as visiting faculty at University of Western Cape, Capetown, South Africa, and at Yale University.

Leterre’s areas of research include the history of ideas, political philosophy and security studies. He is author of Alain, The First Intellectual (2006), A Handbook on General Culture (in its third edition), The Left and the Fear of Liberalism (2000) and Political Reason: Alain and Democracy (2000). He has been a columnist for the Christian newspaper LaCroix since 2004 and has contributed journal articles, organized symposiums and served on national education commissions.

Leterre presented two lectures in French at Miami in spring 2008.

He replaces Ekkehard Stiller, who has been MUDEC dean since 1989. Stiller announced plans to retire at the end of the 2008-2009 academic year.
