Graduate student selected for research program at Peru's Jicamarca Radio Observatory

03/11/2009

Nicholas Matteo, a Miami University graduate student in the department of mathematics, is one of three international students selected to participate in the International Research Experience Program at the Jicamarca Radio Observatory in Peru. The observatory is the premier scientific facility in the world for studying the equatorial ionosphere.

Matteo, who graduated from Miami in 2008 with a major in mathematics and a minor in computer engineering, is advised by Jade Morton, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering. Through the International Research Experience Program he will work with a variety of radar and radio instrumentation and GPS receivers to study the impact of Earth’s atmosphere on the quality and accuracy of GPS signals.

The 10-week summer research program, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, provides travel expenses, lodging and a stipend to selected students.
