Katia Del Rio-Tsonis

Katia Del Rio-Tsonis has been promoted to professor of zoology. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of California San Diego in 1986. After working for several years in different institutions, she obtained her master’s in 1993 and doctorate in 1996 from the National University of Mexico. She then did postdoctoral work at the University of Dayton and joined the department of zoology at Miami in 1999.

Del Rio-Tsonis has published 48 peer reviewed research publications in journals including Nature, PNAS, Development and Journal of Immunology. She has also written six reviews and four book chapters. She is currently funded by the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is recipient of a Prevent Blindness America Investigator Award.

She has served on committees reviewing grants for the Center for Scientific Review of the NIH and for the National Eye Institute of the NIH. Del Rio-Tsonis is co-director of the Center for Visual Sciences founded at Miami in 2007. Her research focuses on determining the cellular and molecular mechanisms of lens and retina regeneration.
