Janssen’s research interests include molecular responses and adaptations by bacteria to environmental stress. Recently, his research has focused on the mechanisms by which messenger RNA is recognized and bound by bacterial ribosomes as an early step in the process of protein synthesis and the diverse functions of RNA in regulating gene expression. His research has been funded by grants through the National Institutes of Health. Several students who received training in Janssen’s laboratory have published their work in leading journals. He teaches a range of courses, including general and advanced microbiology, molecular biology, laboratory courses, graduate seminars and summer workshops for teachers. Janssen has participated in a number of student, departmental and university committees and provides editorial and grant reviewing services to his profession. Janssen earned bachelor and doctoral degrees from the University of Minnesota and completed postdoctoral work at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, England. He joined the Miami faculty in 1993. |
