María Auxiliadora Alvarez

María Auxiliadora Alvarez has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of Spanish and Portuguese. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Alvarez completed her master’s and doctorate in Spanish literature at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Her work as a critical researcher includes the areas of colonial history, women’s studies and contemporary poetry. Alvarez has published articles in international literary journals, and her essay book Alquimia y Paradoja Mística, Estudios Sobre la Poesía de San Juan de la Cruz, César Vallejo y José Angel Valente has been accepted for publication by Fondo de Cultura Económica, a leading editorial house in Latin America.

Alvarez has also published seven books of poetry. She received the Concejo Municipal de Cali Young Poetry Award (Colombia, 1974), the Fundarte Poetry National Award (Venezuela, 1999) and the María Pía Gratton International Award (United States, 1999). Two anthologies are forthcoming in 2009 by Editorial Candaya (Spain) and Monte Avila Editores Latinoamericana (Venezuela).
