Susan Baker Brehm

Susan Baker Brehm has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of speech pathology and audiology. Brehm joined the Miami University faculty in August of 2003. She completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Miami and her doctorate at the University of Florida.

Brehm teaches coursework in the area of speech and hearing science, anatomy and physiology, voice disorders and research methods. Her research focuses on respiration for speech and normal and disordered laryngeal function. Her research has involved collaborations with faculty in the department of kinesiology and health and the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center’s Center for Pediatric Voice Disorders.

Brehm’s work has been published in speech science and medical journals including Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, Journal of Voice, and the International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology. She recently received a grant for $337,000 from the National Institute of Deafness and Communication Disorders to examine inspiratory muscle strength training in children and adults with upper airway obstruction. Brehm also currently serves as editor for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Perspectives on Voice and Voice Disorders publication.
